What are Vastu zones?
A Vastu zone is a slice of the floor plan in one direction, measured from the centre of the plan (the Brahma Bindu). In classical Vastu there are eight directions. Many consultants today use 16 zones, each exactly 22.5° wide, because a narrower slice gives a more precise reading — especially for entrances, kitchens and toilets.
Each zone is linked to one of the five elements and to an area of life. When an activity suits its zone, the space is said to support it; when it doesn’t, Vastu calls it a dosha.
How to read a zone
- Zones are fixed by the compass, not by the way the house faces. North is always North.
- Measure from the centre of the plan you are analysing — the house or flat, not the whole society.
- A room can cover two zones. Then both zones matter, and the larger share usually matters more.

Zones beginners should know first
North-East (NE) — keep it light
Linked to water, clarity and spirituality. It is the best zone for a pooja room and should stay clean and uncluttered. A toilet or kitchen here is treated as a major dosha.
South-East (SE) — the fire zone
Linked to fire, cash flow and vitality. It is the ideal zone for the kitchen.
South-West (SW) — stability
Linked to earth, relationships and stability. It suits the master bedroom and heavy storage, and should never hold a toilet or the main door.
South-South-West (SSW) and West-North-West (WNW) — letting go
Linked to disposal and detox, which is why these two are rated best for toilets.
North-North-East (NNE) — health
Linked to health, healing and immunity. Clutter or a toilet here is a common concern in Medical Vastu.

Frequently asked questions
Why 16 zones and not 8?
Eight directions are easy to remember, but each one covers 45°. Splitting them into 16 zones of 22.5° makes the analysis more precise, especially for entrances, kitchens and toilets.
Which is the most important zone?
Every zone matters for its own area of life. North-East is traditionally kept the lightest and cleanest, and South-West the heaviest and most stable.
Do the zones change if my house faces a different direction?
No. Zones are fixed by the compass, not by the facing of the house. Only the rooms that fall in each zone change.
